Letter to Y. Of the century of language

 
 
Dear Y.,
 
土曜日には遠路ありがとうございました。
またPCの設定なども改良してもらい感謝しています。私ではなかなかできません。
そのとき少し話しかけたことですが、忙しい中で途中になってしまいました。
それで今日はメールを書くこととしました。時代の変化についてです。
 
私のTwitterは、1週間で20-30ほど、ひと月で100-200ほどがふつうですが、
昨年くらいから少し変化が出て、時々、1000を超えることが出てくるようになりました。
それらは大体私が見ても重要そうなpaperであることが多く、機械的なaccessとは少し違います。
 
昨年2017年12月24日にtwitterで紹介した、言語のdimensionについてのaccessが、今日1月8日現在で3940、その後12月30日に出したnote add edition版が2441と二つで合計して6300を超えています。
この論考は言語の中に次元が内在すると仮定したとき、その状況は数学的にどのように表現できるかというような内容で、多分普通の人にはあまり縁のないものと思われます。
 
 
 
次元という観念が多くの人を引き付けるのはわかりますが、それが言語に内在した場合の数学による検討までは普通の人にとっては延伸しないでしょう。
これに類似した論考はこれまでも、私のsite では日常的に掲載していましたが、反響は少ないものでした。
 
言語に次元がかかわる最も単純な例として、メビウスの輪の場合を述べたものがあります。
 
 
 
Bloggerのstatisticsでみると範囲はアフリカや南米にまで及んでいます。
どうやら言語の次元などというとりとめもないものの数学的表現が、この社会のある種の人たちに興味を抱かせるようになってきたのかもしれません。
 
21世紀は言語の世紀だというのが私の見解です。それも視覚的言語、例えばPCで見ている文字などもその一例です。
 
 
 
言語と文字については、去年春に少し整理して書きました。
 
 
文字の歴史的状況をギリシャ文字の解読に即して述べたものも、文字の重要性に言及しています。これは一昨年の夏のものです。
 
 
メビウスの輪において、次元は時間の存在を前提として初めて意味を持ちます。
すなわち次元を同一方向に時間に乗って移動するとき（oriented)に、初めて意味を持ちます。
 
言語、というより文字に内在する時間という観念は、私が20代のころつまり1970年代はじめに、近代中国のまぎれもない天才、王国維の論文を読んだことに始まります。
ただそれについてその延長を私が書くためには、数学という表現法が必要でしたので、30年以上を要したことになりました。
 
 
王国維の論文は、亘という文字の甲骨文は、舟が川の両岸を行き来する状況を示したものだと述べ、そこから恒の字が「つねに」という時間的な永続の意味を持つようになると述べています。
つまり文字が時間の経過を示しています。
 
 
欧米では表意文字は歴史的早く消えてしまいますので、私たちのような東洋的な文字に対する感覚とはほとんど無縁でした。
しかし近年はPCで代表される視覚文字、また絵文字、LATEX等々、視覚的要素が大きく出てきました。
LATEXは歴史的20大発見と評価する見解もなされています。
 
 
世界的に使われるようになった「非常口」の絵文字なども、「逃げる」という時間的動作を表現しています。
 
こうしたいくつかを見ただけでも、言語に内在する時間というものが、言語研究などのある種の人々にある種の示唆を与えたかもしれません。
しかし哲学的に述べても私にとって、普遍性はありません。そのためにはどうしても数学が必要でした。
私の場合、数学との本格的な出会いは、フランスの数学者集団Bourbaki の存在が必要でした。やはり1970年代でした。
Bourbakiは20世紀後半の代数学に決定的な変化をもたらしました。
 
これと並行して、当時急伸した集合論の意味や理論の整合性というものがどのようなものであるかを根本的に問いただしたKurt Gödelの不完全性定理を懸命に追いかけました。
この方向に関しては、Godelと親交のあった竹内外史の論考が良き導きとなりました。
 
 
しかし集合論および数学基礎論では、私が考える言語の数学的表現は、当時の自分の非力さもありますが、まだ充分には行えない感じがしました。
数学が、言語、というより人文科学や社会科学の分野までを広く深く表現できるまでに進化したのは、多分1980年以降であったような気がします。
無数の数学者たちの努力の集積が、いつの間にか多分予期しなかったほどの大きな恩恵を与えるようになっていたのです。
 
 
私も現代数学の成果のあとを追いました。その途上で1979年千野栄一と再会し、Linguistic Circle of Prague とその中心にいたひとりSergej Karcevskij の存在を教えられました。
これが私の決定的な転機となりました。
 
 
千野とガタピシ音を立てる二階の喫茶店Californiaで話した日々は、私にとって何ものにも替えがたい貴重なものでした。
 
 
しかしこの方向を自らにふさわしい方向で表現すること、すなわち代代数幾何学的として表現するためには、さらに1980年から20年ほどを必要としました。
私の方向がひとまず数学的な表現として結実して来るのは、おおむね2006年のvon Neumann algebra による論考以降となります。
 
 
これ以降の主なpaper はいくつかのZoho site でかなり精密に書かれるようになります。
 
 
2003年から現在にいたる大きな流れは次のessayで概述しました。
 
 
そして今は、言語の幾何化について考えています。
統計的な図像解析が医学などで用いられるようになった現在、私のような理論的なpaperも多少これからは現実的な意味を持つようになるかもしれません。
しかしそれは私の本来的な意図ではなく、私はただ自分の好きな対象を追いかけているだけです。
言語の普遍性 language universals が私の生涯の目標です。
 
 
 
駆け足で述べたのでわかりにくいかもしれませんが、
結論としては、私が書いてきたような、理論的・抽象的なpaperがこの一、二年のうちに若干の人々が読むような状況が生まれてきたような気がするのです。
時代が私を少しは必要と感ずるようになったのかもしれません。
 
このメールの末尾としては、ですから、当面の必須の要件を処理するかたわら、ある程度の長期的な視野を持って、研究を続けることが大切なように感じるのです。
時代を追うのではなく、自分の自由な志向に従って、超時代的に進むのが大切なように思うのです。
 
そんなことを話したかったのですが、当日は忙しかったので、メールとなりました。

    Preface

     
     
     
    This short paper would finally write on signal through the relation between language and nerve, for which using mathematical method at the way.
    This paper's one of kernels is energy which is naturally accepted at the side of nerve, but at the side of language, it may be not accepted widely till now.
    In this paper, I probably do not refer to the language's energy, that has been written several times in the papers before.
    If necessary refer to the next essays.

    Around 2008, I was thinking on energy in language related with distance in language. Distance is one of the kernel themes of my study of language universals in those days. In simply saying, distance is the result of movement and for movement there must inevitably needs energy. So I had thought that if language have distance, there must be energy or its alike in language that is supposed in mathematical models. But in my ability in 2008, I could not develop the deep and wide range of language from the theme, energy and distance. So Energy Distance Theory was still now unfinished.

    Here ends the preparatory work for What is signal?, that began from 21 November 2018.
    From now on this paper will be written at the viewpoint of  quantum group for the relation between quantum and signal-language, that has been the most important theme, quantum language, since 2003, when I wrote a paper titled, manuscript of Quantum Theory for Language.
